Folkestone is located in Kent on the south east coast of England. Its most notable feature is the Eurotunnel which takes freight vehicles and cars from Folkestone to Calais.
Folkestone port has a very long history, with excavations revealing villas and smuggler settlements dating all the way back to c100AD. It was seen by the Romans as a strategic lookout point due to the harbour not being deep enough for large ships. It continued to be a shipping and trading hub over the years and saw a surge in popularity when the cross-channel ferry services were introduced.
The ferry route from Folkestone to Calais has all but closed now due to the fierce competition from the popular Dover port just 20 minutes away, as well as the popularity of the Eurotunnel that operates from Folkestone.
Directions For Getting There
If you are travelling by car, the ferry port and the Eurotunnel are both very accessible. They can be found just off the M20 motorway to London and are well signposted. A similar route is required for buses from various parts of the UK.
If you are travelling by train, there are lots of trains from all over the country that arrive into Folkestone Central. From there, the port and Eurotunnel are around 2 miles or a 25 minute bus journey away.
If you are choosing to fly for part of your journey, Southend airport is just under 40 miles away and Gatwick airport is just under 60 miles away.
