The port of Caen is located in the northwest of France within the province of Normandy. It is one of the newest ferry crossings connecting France and the UK. There is a choice of up to 21 crossings per week that run between Caen and Portsmouth.
Despite the ferry port being relatively new, the port of Caen has a rich history. It was Lower Normandy’s capital during the reign of William the Conqueror during the 10th and 11th centuries. It is also where William the Conqueror is buried. Much of the port was destroyed in 1944 during the D-Day landings, with a large concentration of fighting taking place around the port and the city. This has resulted in the loss of many historical buildings in the city and port compared to other parts of Normandy. However, it has rebranded itself as a busy, modern commercial centre, highlighted by the introduction of the ferry port.
There is only one terminal and only one crossing - Caen to Portsmouth. The route is operated by Brittany Ferries.
If you are travelling by car, Caen Car Ferry Terminal is in Ouistreham. The motorway is close to the ferry port and offers easy access to Paris, the Loire, the south, and Brittany. The port is relatively easy to find via SatNav. In terms of parking, there is an open car park at the passenger terminal for a maximum stay of 72 hours.
If you are travelling to the port via rail, your best route is to take the train from Paris Gare St-Lazare Caen station (about 18KM from the port). The SNCF service from Paris takes approximately 2 hours.
If you are travelling by coach, your options are a little more limited but there is a shuttle service between Ouistreham and Caen. However, this service does not run for the evening ferry arrivals in Ouistreham.
